Despite being one of the most well known and successful technology brands of the digital age and developing a series of mobile operating systems, Microsoft are far from major players in the mobile phone handset industry. Their current focus is to ally with established manufacturers such as Nokia and HTC in a software provision capacity.

In spite of this absence of models, back at the beginning of the millennium, Microsoft were pushing the boundaries in terms of what we now call smartphones. This promising start resulted in the launch of the Microsoft Kin in the USA. The Kin was however withdrawn within 2 months of launch and never rolled out to the UK, with all attentions within the company turned to development of the Windows Phone 7 platform instead. It simply boils down to 'sticking with what you know'.
