Phone Watches ? The Time is nowJames Bond enthusiasts the world over have longed to own gadgets which featured in the films for decades. As technology advances, more and more of these initially hypothetical devices have been made possible. Although many are frivolous or of no use for the non-secret service employed members of society: some have really struck a chord, few more so than the watch communicator. In 1977's The Spy Who Loved Me, Bond sported a Seiko Quartz watch which featured a built-in telex which allowed him to receive messages directly from MI6. With the conception of this gadget came a demonstration to the world of the notion of wireless communication to a portable wrist-mounted device. This concept was developed further in the film For Your Eyes Only (1981) in which 007's Seiko wristwatch was now capable of receiving digital messages and contained a 2-way radio /transmitter for voice communication. With the development and mainstream presence of mobile phones growing rapidly over the past few decades, the James Bond franchise drew attention away from the idea of a phone within a watch. There are many explanations as to why Hollywood's focus on this particular idea waned but the most prevalent reason is that watch phones became a reality- hence no longer the subject of science fiction, but instead part of scientific reality. There have been an abundance of watch/mobile phone hybrid concepts and bespoke items in recent years and now finally these devices are starting to become truly accessible to the general public. The Swap Active Watch Phone or the Swap Signature Watch Phone for instance, which was launched in December of 2009 boasts all the features of a high-end full scale phone: but all mounted in a wristwatch. With a built in covert camera, full phone functionality and 1.5inch touch screen it could well have been Bond's greatest gadget back in the late 70's! Now however it is simply a user-friendly multimedia lifestyle device, with it's built in music player and USB and Bluetooth headset connectivity. It is an indication of the change in our culture however that the most appealing aspect of the idea of a concept of a watch/phone hybrid is unlikely to be its features as such. But more so the fact that it essentially reduces the amount of equipment we carry on our person. With many people refusing to leave the house without their phone, mp3 player, watch and digital camera: the idea of one small piece of kit which handles the functions of all of those items holds some serious appeal. With that in mind, not to mention the great showing-off factor of such a gizmo it seems that watch phones could well be adorning all our wrists over the next few years.
