A Guide to Free Line Rental by Redemption

It's common knowledge that 'you don't get something for nothing'. This old adage seems to apply particularly aptly to mobile phones. Despite networks claiming that a handset is 'FREE!' they inevitably then expect the customer to pay a monthly line rental in the region of £20-£40 for the duration of their contract. A proportion of this charge effectively covers the cost of the phone itself and as such it isn't exactly free in the end!

There are however a number of mobile phone companies who are somewhat bucking the trend with regard to this round-about method of paying for something touted as free, by offering free line rental by redemption. Quite simply this means that the customer pays their line rental as normal but then at certain intervals is eligible for a refund of fees previously paid. Although simple in theory, the reality can be a little confusing; the following tips aim to help in choosing a free or heavily discounted line rental package which is legitimate and (relatively) straightforward:

1. Check all the available deals.

By comparing all the deals available on a certain handset and tariff it is often possible to find offers which boast a free or heavily discounted line rental incentive. These deals are generally only available through third parties, as such; scouring websites which specialise in comparing tariff options can reap dividends.

2. Assess the credibility of the chosen option and vendor.

If the chosen option incorporates free or heavily discounted line rental by redemption it is particularly important to research into the organisation offering the package. Although the vast majority are legitimate, it is prudent to double check that the company outlines details of the payment and redemption system under a 'terms and conditions' section (or similar) on their website. As redemption offers involve paying out in order to be refunded, the customer will be paying out directly in the first instance, as such it is essential to know where precisely the money is going to be certain that the redemption payments will occur at a later date.

3. Gain a high level of familiarity with the terms of redemption.

Free line rental by redemption constitutes a vast discount in some cases, as a consequence, the system for claiming line rental payments back is not always as straight-forward as it could be. By making the customer go out of their way in order to claim payments back, the provider knows that many individuals will forget/not bother posting back bills etc in order to receive remuneration. To guarantee the best deal is had, a savvy customer should fully familiarise themselves with the terms of the redemption programme and ensure that they can carry out the necessary steps to get their cash back.

Despite the potential pitfalls outlined above, free line rental by redemption offers incredible value if the appropriate research is undertaken. Potential purchasers just need to keep their wits about them, go through reliable channels and ensure that all steps required to get cash back are carried out as specified.
